ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Forward Emily Frankland (So., Sammamish/Skyline) scored an unassisted game-winning goal in 87th minute as Western Washington University defeated Sonoma State University, 2-1, in a non-conference women's soccer contest Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Field.

Western improved to 3-1-0 with its second straight win, while Sonoma State suffered its first loss in five games.

"That was a huge win for us," said Western coach Travis Connell. "I believe it's the first time that we have beaten Sonoma State on the road."

Frankland's goal came following a scramble in front of the net, in which she emerged with the ball and poked it past the goalkeeper.

"It was a great solo effort by Frankland," Connell said.

The Vikings' opened the scoring in the 25th minute, Claire Morgan (So., Bellingham) finding the net after receiving a cross from Frankland.

Ten minutes later, Sonoma State tied the game at 1-1 as Tracy Webster scored on an assist by Taylor Colacion.

Connell praised the play of Western goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), who made three saves, two of them on one-on-one opportunities.

Western had a 14-5 shot advantage and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Frankland has garnered seven points in Western's first four games, scoring two goals and assisting on three others.

The Vikings next travel to Chico State for a non-league contest Wednesday (7 p.m.).
